Time for a change

Κοντεύουν 4 χρόνια από τη στιγμή που ξεκίνησα να εργάζομαι στο ελληνικό υποκατάστημα της Microsoft.

Αυτό ξεπερνά κατά ένα ολόκληρο χρόνο το μέσο όρο παραμονής που είχα μέχρι σήμερα στις διάφορες εταιρείες που έχω εργαστεί και σίγουρα το αντικείμενο της δουλειάς μου έπαιξε ένα πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο σ΄αυτή την επέκταση.

Ξεκίνησα στο τμήμα των Συμβουλευτικών Υπηρεσιών της εταιρείας (Microsoft Professional Services λέγονται επίσημα) που είναι το τμήμα που χρησιμοποιεί – στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις – ότι πιο καινούργιο έρχεται από την εταιρεία για να υλοποιήσει για λογαριασμό μεγάλων πελατών, είτε έργα υποδομών (infrastructure) είτε έργα ανάπτυξης εφαρμογών (development). Σίγουρα όχι μια εύκολη υπόθεση γιατί συνήθως οι κλίμακες και οι απαιτήσεις των έργων είναι πολύ μεγάλες και σύνθετες ενώ σίγουρα οι πελάτες περιμένουν από τους ανθρώπους της Microsoft απόλυτη τεχνογνωσία σε όλο το φάσμα των προϊόντων της. Και πρέπει να ξέρετε ότι δεν είναι και λίγα, αφού όλα μαζί ξεπερνούν τα 500 προϊόντα.

Είναι κρίμα που δεν είχα ανακαλύψει τις μέρες που δούλευα στα Professional Services το blogging γιατί σίγουρα θα ήταν πολύ ενδιαφέρον να ακουστούν ιστορίες, προβλήματα αλλά … και λύσεις από μέσα. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι τα παιδιά που δουλεύουν τώρα εκεί έχουν πολλά να μοιραστούν, άλλωστε κάποιοι όπως ο Νίκος έχουν ήδη ξεκινήσει να εξασκούν “το άθλημα”.

Στη συνέχεια πέρασα στο ρόλο που βρίσκομαι μέχρι σήμερα.

Το τμήμα λέγεται Developer Platform Evangelism group και όλοι εμείς που δουλεύουμε σ’ αυτό θεωρητικά καλούμαστε “ευαγγελιστές”. Ok, το είδα το χαμόγελο σας, αυτός άλλωστε είναι και ο λόγος που δεν πολυχρησιμοποιούμε τον τίτλο στην Ελλάδα. Βέβαια η αλήθεια είναι μια παρουσίαση που είχα ετοιμάσει για τo Greek Bloggers Camp ‘07 το καλοκαίρι που μας πέρασε, μου χάρισε μια από τις πρώτες θέσεις στις μηχανές αναζήτησης στο λήμμα “ευαγγελιστής”

Αυτό τον τελευταίο 1.5 χρόνο προσπάθησα να καταλάβω, να δουλέψω, να παρουσιάσω, να προωθήσω, να φανταστώ, να παραδεχθώ τις αδυναμίες, αλλά πρώτα από όλα να ζήσω το Internet, τις τεχνολογίες αλλά και τις πρακτικές του μέσα από τις προτάσεις της Microsoft και όχι μόνο.

Έγραψα αρκετά blog posts, άρθρα σέ έντυπα, μίλησα σε παρουσιάσεις, μέχρι και στην τηλεόραση εμφανίστηκα στα δευτερόλεπτα δημοσιότητας που μου αναλογούν, συμμετείχα σε events στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό και γνώρισα ενδιαφέροντες ανθρώπους που ζουν και αναπτύσσουν το ελληνικό Internet σήμερα.

Αποφάσισα να συνεχίσω την εξερεύνηση του Internet από ένα διαφορετικό ρόλο, μέσα από ένα καινούργιο σχήμα με αντικείμενο τη σχεδίαση και υλοποίηση ολοκληρωμένων web στρατηγικών, χρησιμοποιώντας υπάρχουσες αλλά κυρίως ολοκαίνουργιες, πλούσιες και “δικτυωμένες” τεχνολογίες και πρακτικές.

Μαζί μου στη νέα αυτή προσπάθεια ο Νίκος Δρανδάκης, ένας άνθρωπος που ξέρει καλά τα social media, ζει και δουλεύει εδώ και καιρό μ’ αυτά και μοιράζεται τον ενθουσιασμό μου για τα πράγματα που μπορούμε να κάνουμε μαζί τους.

Layers of connectivity

I was thinking the other day about different options we have available while we are trying to layer our social network.

In the beginning we had only the old time classic paper address book. I remember that every 2-3 years, usually at New Year’s Eve, I had to copy all names and phones to a new one since the old was too used.

Then I discovered Palm. Actually this was my first mobile electronic address book. Write once, keep them forever. ok, almost for ever, since even Palms had problems.

Then there was email and contacts address book.

Then came our super mobile phones and the rest is history.

Howewer our social networks are layered and nowdays technology gives us the opportunity to differentiate them.

First of all, I have a very small set of people that I know in my MSN Messenger list. These are the people with whom I can have a synchronous discussion and I can see when they are present online or not. I am trying to keep that list really small. Internet connected family contacts are included in this list, too.

Then it’s twitter. The people that I follow as well as the ones that follow me. I am not a really heavy user of twitter, I am trying to keep the number of my posts small and hopefully useful.

Then I have the actual social networks layer. Facebook, Linked In you name it. Again there is a level of choice on who you are connected with, however until now I haven’t rejected more than a couple of friend requests. So this list includes people that I have met physically or not, worked or studied together and with whom I want to maintain a rather asynchronous connection most of the time in a 1:many kind or broadcasting, i.e. sharing news, useful links etc, although I find myself using Facebook’s 1:1 message system in several cases. This morning I just came across a really good post thru Titana on Facebook friendship strategy and I plan to integrate it in my own.

Finally it’s my email contact address book which fortunately is synchronized with my mobile phone, where I have mainly people that I communicate through voice calls or emails. This layer starts to get smaller than my social networks.

Αυτή είναι η απάντηση που έδωσε το 80% των ανθρώπων που ρωτήθηκαν στην Αμερική, για το ποιο είναι το ποσό που έδιναν για μια συσκευή που θα τους επέτρεπε να βλέπουν internet video στο σαλόνι τους.

Αν και τον Αύγουστο του 2007 9.13 δισεκατομμύρια internet videos προβλήθηκαν στις οθόνες του υπολογιστή τους σημειώνοντας μια αύξηση της τάξης του 26% από τις αντίστοιχες προβολές του Ιανουαρίου του 2007, ακόμη καμμία εταιρεία – ούτε καν η ίδια η Apple – δεν κατόρθωσε να πείσει τους αμερικάνους – πόσο μάλλον και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο – να βλέπουν internet video στην τηλεόραση του σαλονιού του.

Just ran into a post from Shed – a guy exploring Enterprise 2.0 tips and tricks – explaining why he loves microblogging and realized that I am using it in a very similar way

From his post :

“So why do I love microblogging? Well it’s nothing more than just presence detection with bells and whistles on. People not only get to know that your hanging around in a place but they also get to know how you’re feeling and what your doing. This in turn reminds them of your existence and sometimes it kicks off something in their brain that reminds them that they need to have a chat with you. Not only that but the status gives them a way in, a way to start the conversation that’s a bit more exciting and a bit easier than just the plain old “hi”. Basically what I’m trying to say is it lowers the barriers of communication. It does this so much that I now even have people who I’ve never heard of contacting me simply because they follow my MS communicator notes. They get something out of it and I get to make another contact, another person who can get stuff done for me when I need a favour.”

It’s really strange and fun that sometimes I find myself speaking to a person I follow up in twitter or facebook and make a comment related with something they had posted. There is always a delayed response while they are thinking “How the hell does he know that …” before I mentioned that I read it in their status. I agree that definetely lowers the barriers of communication. And I believe that if more people in our working environment were using these tools, we could make our interpersonal communication much more easier.
