I think that tag clouds are one of the most useful and valuable inventions that Web 2.0 gave to us. I believe that tag cloud navigation can be used almost everywhere :

  • web sites
  • email mailboxes
  • document libraries
  • even as an alternative way to find information … in a ERP

And we haven’t seen all their applications yet.

Today, I found a web site that gives tag clouds a more artistic look an feel. You can provide you own text, and using fonts, colors, directions, alignments, you name it, they can draw a bunch of different tag clouds. They have even a gallery with available layouts.

Go there and experiment yourself.

And if you don’t know what a tag cloud is, you know where to look for its definition.

Here are my del.icio.us tags in a new look. I like it.

  1. Tags could also replace an operating system’s file system. And then by combining local information with the Internet you can have the so called semantic web. Which shows why the search engine war is far from over :)

  2. Αυτό με το local information και το internet το πιασα, στο άλλο με την αντικατάσταση του operating system από τα tags σε έχασα :-) Για γράψε καμμιά διευκρίνηση

  3. Αντικατάσταση του file system όχι του λειτουργικού. Αντί να οργανώνεις τα αρχεία σου σε φακέλους θα τα οργανώνεις με tags χωρίς να σε απασχολεί που και πως αποθηκεύονται. Επιπλέον οι advanced users θα μπορούν να χρησιμοποιούν SQL Queries για να κάνουν αναζητήσεις στο δίσκο τους.

  4. Btw ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο για το αντικείμενο είναι το Tagging: People-Powered Metadata for the Social Web. Αφενός παρουσιάζει όλες τις παραμέτρους του tagging, αφετέρου έχει πρακτικές συμβουλές για το πως να στηθεί ένα tagging system και τι πολιτικές διαχείρησης των συμμετεχόντων πρέπει να ακολουθηθούν.
