How an Online Service gets extended today
Panos Kontopoulos - 15/07/08Having spent the day talking to clients about the way an online service should open up these days, base its extension giving control to its users, without much of success I admit
, I was really pleased to read TechCrunch’s announcement about publishing an API for data contained in CrunchBase, a tech company database.
It has everything:
- what they publish
- what technologies they are using
- versioning support for future API upgrades
- how they manage usage, licensing, IP rights
- the way you can give feedback to them
- a newly created twitter account
- of course a blog
- even a job opening!
I am not saying that is the way everything should be announced and supported, of course their target audience is mature, demanding and early adopting technology people, ready to consume all this stuff.
However I believe that in most cases of online services, you can identify groups of people hungry to explore such services and functionality, able to contribute in ways you have never thought, talk about them and get engaged and connected.
Excellent job!
